You're seeing Belief Bias when an argument is accepted or dismissed based on whether the conclusion fits the room's prior view. "That can't be right" often means "we don't like the conclusion."

Investing & Analysis

You're seeing Belief Bias when a bear case is rejected as "too negative" or a bull case embraced as "finally someone gets it" without checking the logic and evidence of the argument itself.

How to Use It

Evaluate arguments in two steps: (1) Is the reasoning valid and the evidence relevant? (2) Does the conclusion follow? Don't let the conclusion drive step one. Use steelmanning: restate the best version of the opposing argument and then evaluate it. Pre-commit to accepting a conclusion that follows from good reasoning even when it's uncomfortable.
