Quality is fitness for purpose taken to its extreme — the standard where every detail serves the user and nothing is left sloppy. It's not gold-plating; it's the discipline of doing the essential things exceptionally well. Quality compounds: a product that works reliably earns trust, which earns referrals, which earns margin. Cutting corners saves time once and costs reputation forever. The founder's job is to define what quality means for their product — then hold the line even when shipping pressure mounts. Quality is a strategy, not a department.

Product
You're seeing Quality when the product works reliably, details are polished, and users trust it enough to recommend it without prompting. Quality shows in retention and word-of-mouth, not feature count.
Operations
You're seeing Quality when defect rates are tracked, standards are written down, and the team has permission to stop the line when something isn't right — rather than shipping and patching later.

How to Use It

Define what quality means for your product — the non-negotiable standards. Measure it: defect rate, NPS, support tickets, return rate. Give the team authority to hold the standard. Build quality into the process (reviews, tests, checklists) rather than inspecting it in at the end.
