Business & Strategy
Section 1
Core Idea
Quality is fitness for purpose taken to its extreme — the standard where every detail serves the user and nothing is left sloppy. It's not gold-plating; it's the discipline of doing the essential things exceptionally well. Quality compounds: a product that works reliably earns trust, which earns referrals, which earns margin. Cutting corners saves time once and costs reputation forever. The founder's job is to define what quality means for their product — then hold the line even when shipping pressure mounts. Quality is a strategy, not a department.

Section 2
How to See It
Product
You're seeing Quality when the product works reliably, details are polished, and users trust it enough to recommend it without prompting. Quality shows in retention and word-of-mouth, not feature count.
Operations
You're seeing Quality when defect rates are tracked, standards are written down, and the team has permission to stop the line when something isn't right — rather than shipping and patching later.
Section 3
How to Use It
Define what quality means for your product — the non-negotiable standards. Measure it: defect rate, NPS, support tickets, return rate. Give the team authority to hold the standard. Build quality into the process (reviews, tests, checklists) rather than inspecting it in at the end.
Decision filter
"Have we defined our quality standard — and are we measuring it? If quality is just a feeling, it'll erode under pressure."
As a founder
Set the quality bar early and make it explicit. Write down the standards. Measure defects, returns, and support load as quality proxies. Give the team authority to block a release that doesn't meet the bar. Quality compounds — every shipped defect erodes trust that took months to build.

Founders & Leaders
Jiro OnoMaster sushi chef; subject of Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Ono has spent decades refining every detail of his sushi — rice temperature, fish preparation, the angle of the cut. His standard: each piece must be better than the last. This obsessive quality built a global reputation from a ten-seat basement restaurant. Founders can extract the principle: define a narrow quality standard, hold it relentlessly, and let the reputation compound. Quality at Jiro's level isn't about doing more — it's about doing the essential things better than anyone.

Reinforces
Quality Signals
Quality must be perceived to matter commercially. Quality signals — materials, design, packaging, service — communicate the standard to the buyer. Quality without signals is invisible; signals without quality is fraud.
Reinforces
Reputation
Quality builds reputation over time. Each interaction that meets the standard deposits trust; each failure withdraws it. Reputation is the compounding return on consistent quality.
Tension
Six Sigma
Six Sigma pursues near-zero defects through statistical process control. The tension: Six Sigma is rigorous but can become bureaucratic. Quality as strategy requires the standard without necessarily the apparatus.

One Key Quote
— Jiro Ono, Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011)"Once you decide on your occupation, you must immerse yourself in your work. You have to fall in love with your work. You must dedicate your life to mastering your skill. That is the secret of success and the key to being regarded honourably."
