Core Idea

Placement Bias is the tendency for the position of information — where it appears in a sequence, on a page, in a list, or in a physical space — to disproportionately influence evaluation and choice. Items placed first get more attention (primacy). Items placed at eye level sell more. Options listed at the top of a menu get selected more often. The bias operates because the brain uses placement as a heuristic for importance — what's prominent must be significant, what's buried must be marginal. In business, placement bias means that the order in which you present options to a board, the position of features on a product page, and the sequence in which candidates are interviewed all systematically affect outcomes in ways unrelated to underlying quality. The bias is particularly dangerous in high-stakes decisions where the evaluation should be based on merit but is being quietly influenced by arrangement.

Product
You're seeing it when the first option in a pricing page consistently outperforms alternatives regardless of which plan is placed there. The conversion difference isn't driven by the plans' relative value — it's driven by placement. Whichever option occupies the primary position captures disproportionate attention and selection.
Decision-Making
You're seeing it when the first candidate interviewed for a role has a structural advantage over later candidates — not because they're better, but because the evaluator's frame of reference is established by whoever appears first, and all subsequent candidates are compared against that initial anchor.

How to Use It

Use placement strategically in contexts where you're presenting information — put the most important option where it will receive the most attention and cognitive weight. Defend against it in contexts where you're evaluating options — randomise the order of alternatives, use blind evaluation processes, and be aware that your assessment of anything presented first or most prominently is likely inflated. The goal is to exploit placement when presenting and neutralise it when deciding.

As a founder
Audit every customer-facing decision architecture — pricing pages, feature lists, onboarding flows — for placement effects. Test whether reordering options changes conversion, and optimise placement to guide customers toward the outcome that serves both their needs and your business. Internally, randomise the presentation order for proposals, candidates, and strategic options to prevent placement from contaminating evaluation quality.
