Core Idea

Context is the surrounding information that determines how a signal is interpreted. The same data point, decision, or behaviour means entirely different things depending on the context in which it occurs. A 10% revenue drop is a crisis in a growing market and expected in a recession. A blunt email is rude from a stranger and efficient from a trusted colleague. As a systems model, context teaches that no element of a system can be understood in isolation — meaning is always relational. The failure to account for context is one of the most common sources of misjudgement in business, investing, and leadership.

Decision-Making
You're seeing it when a board reacts to a single quarter's numbers without considering the competitive landscape, seasonal patterns, or deliberate investment trade-offs. They're reading data without context and drawing the wrong conclusions.
Leadership
You're seeing it when a manager applies the same feedback style to every team member regardless of experience, personality, or situation. The feedback itself isn't wrong — the context it's delivered in makes it ineffective.

How to Use It

Before interpreting any signal, map its context. Ask: what else was happening when this occurred? What frame of reference am I using? What would change my interpretation? Build the habit of providing context alongside data — in reports, decisions, and communications. Data without context is noise.
