High Performance & Learning
Section 1
Core Idea
Single-tasking means doing one thing at a time with full attention. The case for it is neurological: the brain doesn't truly multitask on cognitive work — it switches between tasks, and each switch incurs a cost in time, accuracy, and mental energy. Research on attention residue shows that when you shift from Task A to Task B, part of your cognition remains stuck on A, degrading performance on B. Single-tasking eliminates switching costs entirely. The result isn't just more output per hour but higher-quality output — the kind of work that requires sustained, deep engagement rather than surface-level toggling.

Section 2
How to See It
Execution
You're seeing it when a developer who closes Slack and email for two hours produces more and better code than one who stays "available" all day but never enters deep focus.
Leadership
You're seeing it when a CEO blocks Monday mornings for strategic thinking and consistently generates better decisions than weeks when that time gets fragmented by reactive meetings.
Quality
You're seeing it when error rates drop after a team switches from juggling multiple projects simultaneously to sequential, focused project cycles.
Section 3
How to Use It
Identify your most important task each day and work on it first, before opening email or chat. Close every application except the one you need. Set a specific time block — even 60 minutes of protected single-task focus will outperform a full day of fragmented multitasking. Batch reactive work (email, messages, approvals) into designated windows so it doesn't bleed into creative or strategic time.
Decision filter
"Right now, am I doing one thing with full attention — or toggling between several things at reduced capacity?"
As a founder
Protect your highest-leverage work from context-switching. Block 2–3 hours daily for single-task deep work on the most important problem. Batch communications into fixed windows. The compounding gains from sustained focus on high-value work far exceed the cost of delayed responses.

Founders & Leaders
Bill GatesCo-founder of Microsoft; philanthropist
Gates famously took "Think Weeks" — week-long retreats where he isolated himself to read and think about a single set of problems without interruption. These weren't vacations; they were single-tasking at its most extreme. Several of Microsoft's most consequential strategic decisions emerged from Think Weeks, including early moves into internet technology. The practice demonstrates a core principle: breakthrough thinking requires sustained, uninterrupted attention that multitasking structurally prevents. For founders, even a scaled-down version — one morning per week of protected single-task time — can produce disproportionate strategic clarity.

Deep Work
Deep work is cognitively demanding work performed without distraction. Single-tasking is the behavioural discipline that makes deep work possible — you cannot do deep work while multitasking.
Driven-by
Attention Residue
Attention residue is the cognitive cost of switching between tasks — part of your mind stays on the previous task. Single-tasking eliminates this cost by removing switches entirely.
Pairs-with
Pomodoro Technique
The Pomodoro Technique structures work into timed intervals of focused effort. It's a tactical implementation of single-tasking — each Pomodoro is a commitment to one task for one interval.

One Key Quote
— Cal Newport"Efforts to deepen your focus will struggle if you don't simultaneously wean your mind from a dependence on distraction."
Section 11
Summary & Further Reading
Single-tasking eliminates the switching costs of multitasking, producing both higher output and higher quality. The brain does one thing well at a time. Structure your work accordingly.
