Section 1
Core Idea
The self-relevance effect is the tendency for people to process and remember information more deeply when it relates to them personally. Messages framed around "you" and "your situation" get encoded more strongly than abstract or third-person content. The core idea: relevance is the gateway to attention. If you want someone to remember what you said, make it about them. This applies to pitches, product messaging, leadership communication, and negotiation — anything where retention matters.

How to See It
Sales & Messaging
You're seeing Self-relevance Effect when a pitch that describes a generic market problem gets polite nods, but the same pitch reframed as "here's what this means for your team, your revenue, your timeline" gets real engagement. The information didn't change — the personal framing did.
Product & Onboarding
You're seeing Self-relevance Effect when users skip generic tutorials but engage deeply with personalised onboarding that references their industry, role, or specific goals. People learn faster when the material feels like it's about their world.
Section 3
How to Use It
Frame communications, product experiences, and pitches around the recipient's context. Replace "companies like yours" with "your company." Replace feature lists with outcome statements tied to the user's specific situation. In leadership, connect strategic decisions to what they mean for each team, not just the org chart.
Decision filter
"Am I framing this in terms that matter to me, or in terms that matter to them? If I can't articulate why this is personally relevant to my audience, I haven't finished preparing."
As a founder
Make every communication pass the self-relevance test before it ships. Investor decks should speak to the investor's thesis. Customer emails should reference the customer's context. Internal memos should connect company strategy to each team's daily reality. The extra effort to personalise is small; the difference in retention and action is enormous.

Founders & Leaders
Oprah WinfreyMedia mogul; built a brand on personal relevance
Winfrey built a media empire on one insight: people pay attention when the message feels personally relevant. She didn't just interview guests — she framed every story through the lens of "how does this apply to your life?" Her audience didn't watch for information; they watched because every segment felt like it was about them. Founders can apply this by positioning products and messaging around the customer's identity, not just their needs. When pitching, fundraising, or marketing, translate features into personal stakes. Winfrey proved that the fastest path to attention isn't being louder — it's making the audience feel like you're speaking directly to them.

Endowment Effect
We value things more once they feel like "ours." The self-relevance effect explains why: information tied to our identity gets processed more deeply, making the associated object or idea feel more valuable. Both biases are powered by the same mechanism — personal connection increases perceived worth.

Curse of Knowledge
The curse of knowledge makes experts forget what's not obvious to others. The self-relevance effect explains why: experts process information through their own frame and assume it's universally relevant. Counter by deliberately reframing expert knowledge in the audience's self-relevant terms.

Framing Effect
How information is framed changes how it's processed. The self-relevance effect is a specific framing lever: framing information as personally relevant to the recipient is one of the most powerful ways to increase both attention and retention.

Summary & Further Reading
The self-relevance effect means people process and remember information more deeply when it relates to them personally. Use it by framing pitches, products, and communications in the recipient's context. Make it about them — their goals, their problems, their identity — and you gain attention, retention, and action that generic messaging never achieves.
