Self-Handicapping

Self-Handicapping is the strategy of creating obstacles to your own performance so that failure can be attributed to those obstacles rather than to lack of ability. A student who parties the night before an exam, a founder who doesn't prepare for a board meeting, an athlete who stops training before a competition — all are protecting their self-image by arranging a ready-made excuse. If they fail, it's because of the handicap, not because they weren't good enough. If they succeed despite it, the achievement seems even more impressive. In business, self-handicapping manifests as chronic under-preparation, manufactured crises, refusal to commit fully, and the habitual creation of conditions that make failure explainable. Notice when you're creating conditions that give you a built-in excuse for failure. Ask: "Am I setting myself up to succeed — or setting up a story for why I might fail?" When you see self-handicapping in others, address it by making full preparation safe and making excuses unnecessary through a culture that treats honest failure as learning rather than judgment.
