Ideological Bias

Ideological Bias is the tendency to interpret information, evaluate evidence, and make decisions through the lens of a pre-existing belief system rather than on the merits. When ideology becomes the operating system for judgment, evidence that supports the ideology is accepted uncritically and evidence that contradicts it is dismissed or rationalised away. In business, ideological bias manifests as rigid adherence to a strategic doctrine — "we're a product-led company," "we never discount," "remote work doesn't work" — even when the evidence demands revision. The danger is not that ideologies are always wrong; some are deeply useful. The danger is that ideology converts from a useful heuristic into an identity, at which point updating becomes psychologically impossible.

Audit your company's unexamined beliefs. List the statements your team treats as axioms — "we never compete on price," "our customers don't care about X." Then ask: what evidence would change our mind? If no evidence would change it, you've identified an ideology, not a strategy. Separate useful operating principles from rigid identity-level beliefs that prevent adaptation.
