Distinction Bias

You're seeing Distinction Bias when two strong candidates are compared on minor differences — slightly different phrasing in an answer, a marginal GPA gap — and the team agonises as if the gap is enormous. In practice, both would perform similarly.

You're seeing Distinction Bias when customers fixate on spec differences between two products (e.g. 256GB vs 512GB) that they'd never notice in daily use. Side-by-side display manufactures a gap that experience would erase.

In hiring, evaluate candidates against the role bar, not against each other. In product decisions, test whether users notice the difference in isolation before investing in it. Save your energy for distinctions that actually change outcomes.

Munger repeatedly warned against what he called "contrast-caused distortion" — the human tendency to judge things relative to what's nearby rather than on absolute merit. He advised making decisions based on intrinsic value and fundamental criteria, not on how options look next to each other. Founders can apply this by building evaluation systems anchored to absolute standards: does this hire meet the bar, does this product solve the job, does this deal clear the hurdle rate? When you catch your team debating marginal differences between similar options, step back and ask whether either option clears the bar independently. That reframe collapses false distinctions.
