Change is the transition of a system from one state to another. As a mental model, the insight isn't that change happens — it's that systems resist it. Every stable system has developed equilibria, feedback loops, and structural inertia that fight to maintain the current state. Successful change requires overcoming these forces, which means understanding what holds the current state in place before attempting to move to a new one. The model teaches that the difficulty of change is proportional to the depth of the equilibrium you're disrupting: surface-level changes are easy; structural changes require proportionally greater force, time, or both.

You're seeing it when a company announces a major restructuring but six months later everyone is still operating exactly as before. The formal structure changed, but the informal systems — habits, relationships, incentives — held the old state in place.

Before attempting change, map the forces maintaining the current state. What incentives, habits, structures, and relationships hold things in place? Then determine whether you can alter those forces or must overpower them. Small changes in the maintaining forces often produce larger results than brute-force pushes against the system.
