Build your organisation so it doesn't depend on any one person — including you. Document decisions, distribute authority, develop leaders underneath you. If the company can't function without you for a month, you have a decapitation vulnerability.

Caesar understood decapitation from both sides. He targeted enemy leadership repeatedly — forcing surrenders by capturing or isolating opposing commanders rather than grinding through entire armies. At Alesia, he neutralised Vercingetorix not through attrition but by isolating him from his forces and support. Yet Caesar also embodied the decapitation vulnerability: his assassination destroyed the Republic's fragile stability because too much decision-making power was concentrated in one person. Founders should learn both lessons. Offensively, identify where a competitor's strategy hinges on a few key people. Defensively, build redundancy in your own leadership. Caesar's military success came from targeting leadership; his political failure came from being the single point of failure himself.
