The Core Idea

In physics, the center of gravity is the point at which an object's mass can be considered concentrated for the purpose of analyzing forces and balance. In military strategy, Clausewitz adapted the concept: the center of gravity is the source of an adversary's strength — the hub of power and movement that, if disabled, makes the rest of the system collapse or stall. Strike the center of gravity and you multiply effect; strike elsewhere and you absorb cost for marginal gain. The same logic applies to markets, organisations, and systems: every complex entity has a point (or a small set of points) where leverage is highest. Find it; protect your own; attack or neutralise the opponent's.
The center of gravity is not always obvious. It can be physical (a key facility, a bottleneck resource), moral (cohesion, will), or structural (a critical dependency, a hub in a network). It can shift over time as the system reconfigures. The strategic discipline is to ask repeatedly: where does this system's strength actually come from? Where would a blow have the most effect? The answer is often not the largest or most visible element but the one that others depend on.
Use the model offensively and defensively. Offensively: direct resources at the adversary's center of gravity rather than at peripheral targets. Defensively: harden your own center of gravity, diversify critical dependencies, and avoid exposing a single point of failure. The mistake is to confuse activity with impact — attacking many points without concentrating on the one that matters.

Look for the element that, if removed or degraded, would cause disproportionate failure or loss of function. The center of gravity is the node or capability that the rest of the system depends on.
Business
You're seeing Center of Gravity when a competitor's moat depends on one asset — a key patent, a single customer segment, or a founder's relationships. Attacking that asset has more effect than attacking their brand or product in general. Your own center of gravity might be a supply relationship, a distribution deal, or a core team.
Technology
You're seeing Center of Gravity when a system has a single point of failure — a database, a service, or an integration — that, if down, takes the rest with it. Architecture that identifies and hardens the center of gravity is more resilient than spreading effort evenly.
Investing
You're seeing Center of Gravity when a company's valuation rests on one assumption — a key contract renewal, a regulatory outcome, or a technology bet. The investment thesis is concentrated there. Understanding that center of gravity tells you what to monitor and what would break the thesis.
Markets
You're seeing Center of Gravity when a market or ecosystem is organised around a hub — a standard, a platform, or a dominant buyer. The hub is the center of gravity; displacement or capture of the hub shifts the whole system. Competing at the periphery is less decisive than competing for the center.

How to Use It

As a founder
Your center of gravity might be product-market fit, a key hire, a partnership, or capital runway. Protect it first. When competing, ask where the incumbent's strength really comes from — often it is distribution, brand, or a locked-in customer base. Attacking head-on on product may be less effective than attacking their center of gravity (e.g. a key channel or contract). The mistake: spreading resources across many initiatives. The second mistake: assuming the center of gravity is static. It can shift as you scale or as the market changes; reassess.
As an investor
Understand where a company's value and defensibility are concentrated. Is it in one customer, one technology, or one person? That concentration is both the center of gravity and the key risk. Diversification of the center of gravity (e.g. multiple revenue streams, key-person insurance) can be a positive; over-concentration can be a negative. When evaluating competitive dynamics, ask which player controls the center of gravity of the market.
As a decision-maker
In any conflict or negotiation, identify what the other side cannot afford to lose — that is often their center of gravity. Your leverage is highest when you can credibly threaten or alter that. Similarly, know what you cannot afford to lose and invest in protecting it.
Common misapplication: Equating "center of gravity" with "biggest" or "most visible." The center of gravity is the source of strength, which can be a small, critical node. Second misapplication: Assuming there is only one. Complex systems can have multiple centers of gravity; the task is to prioritise which to protect or attack first.

Know your center of gravity and protect it. Before you think about growth or attack, know what your system cannot afford to lose. That might be a person, a contract, a technology, or a capability. Invest in hardening and diversification there.
Strike the opponent's center of gravity, not the periphery. Activity is not impact. Attacking marginal features or secondary markets absorbs resources without decisive effect. The question is always: where does their strength actually come from? Direct force there.
Reassess as the system changes. Mergers, new entrants, and technology shifts can move the center of gravity. What was the hub last year may not be the hub next year. Keep the map updated.
