Core Idea

Aumann's agreement theorem says that two rational agents who share a common prior and whose posteriors are common knowledge cannot agree to disagree — they must converge to the same belief. In practice, persistent disagreement usually means differing priors, private information, or irrational updating. The core idea: true disagreement has structure; surface it (priors, evidence, process) instead of assuming the other side is irrational.

You're seeing the theorem's failure when two smart people hold different views and each assumes the other is wrong or biased, instead of asking what priors or information differ.
Negotiation
You're seeing it when parties stay dug in without explicitly sharing what they know or what they assumed. Disagreement persists because evidence and priors aren't aligned, not because one side is unreasonable.

How to Use It

When there's durable disagreement, don't default to "they're irrational." Make priors and evidence explicit: what did each side assume at the start? What information does each have? Update in steps. If you truly share priors and evidence and update rationally, you should converge; if you don't converge, you've found the real difference (prior or information).

"We disagree — do we share the same facts and starting assumptions? If we're both rational and we've shared everything, we shouldn't still disagree. Find the prior or the private information."

In key disagreements, run a short Aumann check: state priors and evidence. If views still differ, the gap is in assumptions or information, not logic. Resolve by aligning on facts and priors, not by arguing harder.
