Conflict

Conflict is the inevitable tension that arises when individuals, teams, or organisations have incompatible goals, values, or interpretations. Most people treat conflict as a problem to be avoided. The mental model reframes it: conflict is information. It surfaces misaligned incentives, unspoken disagreements, flawed assumptions, and structural problems that would otherwise remain hidden until they cause larger damage. The key distinction is between destructive conflict (personal, ego-driven, status-seeking) and productive conflict (idea-driven, evidence-based, resolution-seeking). Destructive conflict erodes trust and wastes energy. Productive conflict strengthens decisions and deepens alignment. The best organisations don't minimise conflict — they channel it. They create structures where disagreement is safe, where ideas compete on merit, and where resolution is expected rather than avoidance.

Build structures that make productive conflict safe and expected. Establish norms: disagree with the idea, not the person. Attack the argument, not the arguer. Commit to the outcome once a decision is made. Create specific forums for conflict — strategy debates, design reviews, red team exercises — so disagreement has a time and place rather than leaking into hallway politics. When you notice conflict avoidance, treat it as a red flag: the problems aren't gone, they're just invisible.
