You're seeing Zero Tolerance when a company fires or sanctions a high performer for a values or safety breach rather than "giving another chance," and explains the decision in terms of the standard, not the person.

You're seeing Zero Tolerance when policies explicitly state "one strike" for specific actions (e.g. harassment, safety violations, data misuse), and leadership backs that with action rather than exceptions for "special cases."

Reserve zero tolerance for a short list: safety, integrity, and the few norms that underpin trust. Define the line in advance; apply it consistently. Avoid expanding the list — if everything is zero tolerance, nothing is. And avoid using it for performance or skill; it's for behaviour and standards that must not slip once.
