You're seeing Subjective Validation when customers describe your product's value in terms far beyond what data supports — because the messaging was personalised to their situation. They didn't validate the claims; the personal relevance made the claims feel self-evidently true.

You're seeing Subjective Validation when a founder reads a generic "traits of successful entrepreneurs" list and finds it describes them perfectly. The list describes everyone vaguely; the personal resonance creates the illusion of accuracy.

In marketing, use subjective validation ethically by making messaging personally relevant — it increases engagement and retention. In analysis, guard against it: when data feels confirming, verify it with the same rigour you'd apply to disconfirming data. Personal resonance is not evidence.

Barnum built his entertainment empire by understanding that people accept general statements as specifically true when those statements feel personal. His shows, promotions, and exhibits all relied on making each audience member feel uniquely addressed. The "Barnum Effect" — a close cousin of subjective validation — is named after him because he exploited the principle so effectively.
