Speed Reading

Speed reading encompasses techniques designed to increase reading velocity while maintaining comprehension: skimming, chunking, reducing subvocalization, and strategic previewing. The practical value isn't raw speed — it's information throughput. A founder who reads three books per week instead of one per month compounds knowledge faster. However, the model has limits: speed-reading techniques work well for scanning, filtering, and extracting key ideas from large volumes of text, but they degrade comprehension on dense, technical, or novel material. The real skill is variable-speed reading — knowing when to skim and when to slow down.

Start by previewing: read the table of contents, introduction, and conclusion first. Then decide which sections merit close reading and which can be skimmed. Use a finger or pointer to pace your eyes and reduce regression (re-reading). Practice chunking — reading groups of words rather than individual words. Accept that not everything deserves the same reading speed: skim for breadth, slow down for depth.
