Military & Conflict
Section 1
Core Idea
Speed as a strategic principle means that the rate of decision-making and execution is itself a competitive advantage — independent of the quality of any individual decision. In military terms, a faster force can choose when and where to engage, exploit openings before they close, and compound small advantages before opponents react. In business, speed means shipping faster, iterating faster, and making decisions faster than competitors — accepting that some decisions will be wrong but that the aggregate effect of speed outweighs the cost of occasional errors. The core idea: in competitive environments, speed is a force multiplier that compounds over time.

Section 2
How to See It
Product Development
You're seeing Speed as advantage when a company ships weekly while competitors ship quarterly — not because each individual release is better but because the cumulative learning and iteration creates a compounding gap.
Organisational Dynamics
You're seeing Speed as liability when a company makes rapid decisions without adequate information, creating a pattern of costly reversals that erode trust and waste resources faster than the speed saves them.
Section 3
How to Use It
Optimise your organisation for decision speed on reversible decisions and execution speed on validated priorities. Remove bottlenecks in approval chains, reduce meeting overhead, and push decision authority to the people closest to the information. Reserve slow, deliberate decision-making for irreversible choices.
Decision filter
"Is this decision reversible? If yes, make it fast and correct course later. If irreversible, slow down. The default should be speed — slowness should require justification, not the other way around."
As a founder
Speed is your greatest structural advantage against larger competitors. They have more resources; you have fewer decision-makers. Protect this advantage by keeping teams small, approval chains short, and iteration cycles fast. The moment you add process that slows you down without adding proportional value, you're giving up your edge.
Section 5
Founders & Leaders
Jensen HuangCo-founder & CEO, NVIDIA
Huang built NVIDIA's dominance through relentless execution speed. While competitors debated market strategy, NVIDIA shipped new architectures at a pace that made competitive responses obsolete before they launched. Huang's organisation operates with what he calls "light-speed" urgency — flat communication structures, rapid resource reallocation, and a culture where speed of execution is treated as a core value rather than a nice-to-have. The insight for founders: speed isn't just about moving fast on any given decision. It's about building an organisation where speed is structural — embedded in how information flows, how decisions are made, and how quickly resources shift to new priorities.

Reinforces
OODA Loop
The OODA loop — Observe, Orient, Decide, Act — makes speed operational. The force that completes its OODA loop faster gains a compounding advantage. Speed is the principle; the OODA loop is the mechanism for achieving it systematically.
Reinforces
Iteration Velocity
Iteration velocity is speed applied to learning — how fast you can ship, measure, and improve. Higher iteration velocity means more learning cycles per unit of time, which compounds into better products and strategies.
Tension
Blitzkrieg
Blitzkrieg applies speed to achieve overwhelming local superiority. The tension: blitzkrieg requires concentration of force, which means speed on one front may come at the cost of exposure on others. Speed without strategic direction is just fast movement, not progress.

One Key Quote
— Jeff Bezos"Speed matters in business. Many decisions are reversible. Those decisions don't need extensive study. Use the 70% rule."
Section 11
Summary & Further Reading
Speed is a force multiplier that compounds over time. Optimise for decision speed on reversible decisions and execution speed on validated priorities. Protect organisational speed by keeping teams small, approval chains short, and iteration cycles fast. Reserve deliberation for truly irreversible choices. In competitive environments, the faster learner wins.
