Self-Enhancement Bias is the tendency to perceive yourself as above average on desirable traits — intelligence, skill, ethics, driving ability — even when statistical reality makes that impossible for most people. The vast majority of people rate themselves above the median on virtually every positive dimension. In business, Self-Enhancement Bias causes founders to overrate their strategic ability, managers to overestimate their leadership quality, and teams to believe they're better than competitors without evidence. The bias isn't vanity — it's a deeply embedded cognitive default that serves emotional stability but undermines honest self-assessment. The founder who thinks they're a better strategist than they are makes worse strategic decisions; the manager who overrates their communication skills fails to improve them.

Assume your self-assessment is inflated and create systems for external calibration — 360 reviews, customer feedback, competitive benchmarking, advisory boards. When you believe you're above average at something, ask: "What specific evidence supports this beyond my own impression?" The most reliable counter is data that you didn't generate about yourself.
