Restraint Bias

Restraint Bias is the tendency to overestimate your ability to control impulsive behaviour. People who believe they have strong willpower expose themselves to more temptation — and consequently fail more often than those who recognise their vulnerability and avoid temptation altogether. In business, Restraint Bias manifests when founders believe they can handle distractions, scope creep, or toxic dynamics through sheer discipline. A founder who thinks they can "manage" a difficult co-founder relationship, "control" their spending once they raise a big round, or "resist" feature creep without process guardrails is exhibiting restraint bias. The bias is doubly dangerous because it discourages the structural protections — policies, systems, environmental design — that actually work, replacing them with overconfident reliance on willpower that reliably fails under stress.

Design systems that don't rely on willpower. Instead of believing you'll resist distractions, remove them. Instead of trusting yourself to stay on budget, create spending controls. Treat your future self as someone with less discipline than your current self — because under stress, fatigue, and excitement, they will be.

Restraint Bias causes overestimation of your ability to resist temptation and maintain discipline, leading to exposure to situations that overwhelm willpower. In business, it undermines spending discipline, focus, and scope management. Counter it by building structural constraints — systems, policies, and environmental design — that enforce discipline without relying on willpower.
