Section 1
Core Idea
The luxury paradox is that for certain goods, higher prices increase rather than decrease demand — the opposite of standard economics. Luxury goods function as status signals: the price is part of the product. A cheaper Hermès bag would sell fewer units, not more, because the high price is what confers exclusivity and social signalling value. This is the Veblen effect — demand rises with price because price itself is the value proposition. The paradox holds only while the brand credibly maintains scarcity, quality perception, and social meaning. For founders, the model reframes pricing: in status-driven markets, lowering price destroys value rather than creating it. The question is whether your product operates on utility logic (lower price = more demand) or signalling logic (higher price = more demand).

How to See It
Luxury
You're seeing the Luxury Paradox when a price increase leads to stronger demand. The product's value is inseparable from its price — exclusivity is the feature.
Branding
You're seeing it when a brand carefully restricts supply and resists discounting, even when it could sell more at a lower price. Perceived scarcity maintains the signalling value.
Product
You're seeing it when customers choose the expensive option because it's expensive — the price signals quality, status, or membership. Lowering it would reduce perceived value.
Section 3
How to Use It
Determine whether your product is utility-driven or signal-driven. If signal-driven, price higher and protect scarcity — discounting destroys value. If utility-driven, standard price-demand logic applies. For signal-driven products, invest in brand, exclusivity, and quality perception; never compete on price. The paradox breaks when the brand loses its signalling credibility.
Decision filter
"Are customers buying utility or signal? If signal, higher price strengthens demand. If utility, standard economics applies. Never discount a signal product."
As a founder
If your product has a signalling component (status, identity, exclusivity), price to reinforce that signal — not to maximise volume. Restrict supply, avoid discounts, and invest in brand equity. If your product is purely utility, ignore the paradox and compete on value. Know which game you're in.

Founders & Leaders
Bernard ArnaultChairman & CEO, LVMH
Arnault built the world's largest luxury conglomerate by understanding that in luxury, price is the product. He acquired brands (Louis Vuitton, Dior, Tiffany) and systematically raised prices, restricted distribution, and invested in exclusivity — each move increasing rather than decreasing demand. Founders in status-adjacent markets can learn the core lesson: if your product signals identity or belonging, lowering price destroys the very thing customers are buying. Protect the signal, protect the margin.

Conspicuous Consumption
Conspicuous consumption (Veblen) is the behaviour that drives the luxury paradox — people buy to signal wealth and status. The paradox is the pricing implication of conspicuous consumption.
Reinforces
Costly Signalling Theory
Luxury pricing is costly signalling: the high price is the cost that makes the signal credible. If the signal were cheap, it wouldn't signal anything. The paradox depends on the signal being expensive.
Leads-to
Brand
Brand is the mechanism that sustains the luxury paradox. Without strong brand (association, exclusivity, quality perception), higher prices repel rather than attract. Brand converts price into signal.

Summary & Further Reading
Luxury paradox: for status goods, higher prices increase demand because the price is the product. Determine whether your offering is utility-driven (standard economics) or signal-driven (luxury paradox). If signal-driven, protect scarcity and never discount.
