Liking/Loving Bias

Liking/Loving Bias is the tendency to distort your judgement in favour of people, products, or ideas you like or love. When you like someone, you overvalue their virtues, underweight their flaws, favour their proposals, and interpret ambiguous behaviour charitably. The bias extends beyond people — founders fall in love with their own products, investors fall in love with their portfolio companies, and leaders fall in love with strategies they personally championed. The distortion isn't that liking is bad; it's that liking bypasses critical evaluation. You stop asking whether the thing is good and start assuming it must be because you feel warmly toward it. In business, liking/loving bias is the silent partner in every hiring decision where "culture fit" overrides competence, every partnership where personal chemistry substitutes for strategic logic, and every product decision where the team's attachment to a feature prevents them from killing it.

Separate your evaluation of a person or idea from your feelings toward them. When you notice strong positive feelings, increase your scrutiny rather than decrease it — the warmer you feel, the more your analytical defences have been lowered. Use structured evaluation criteria that force you to assess performance independently of how much you like the performer.
