Inattentional Bias

Inattentional Bias — sometimes called inattentional blindness — is the failure to notice fully visible and relevant information because your attention is directed elsewhere. The famous "invisible gorilla" experiment demonstrated that people counting basketball passes completely miss a person in a gorilla suit walking through the scene. In business, this operates identically: when you're focused on revenue growth, you miss the customer satisfaction decline happening in plain sight. When you're obsessed with a product launch, you miss the cultural problems festering in your team. The information is there. The signals are visible. But focused attention creates a cone of awareness that excludes everything outside it — including threats and opportunities that are entirely obvious in hindsight.

Build systems that watch what you're not watching. Assign specific team members to monitor domains outside the current focus. Create dashboards that surface negative signals — not just the metrics everyone is celebrating. Schedule regular "peripheral vision" reviews where you deliberately examine the areas your current strategy is ignoring.
