In ecology, a foundational species creates and maintains the habitat that allows an entire ecosystem to exist. Coral builds reefs; old-growth trees create forest canopies. Remove the foundational species, and the ecosystem collapses. The business analog: certain companies, platforms, or individuals serve as the foundation on which an entire market or industry depends. They create the conditions — infrastructure, standards, liquidity, trust — that enable everything else. Understanding which players are foundational reveals where systemic risk lives and where disproportionate leverage exists.

Identify the foundational species in your ecosystem — the platforms, suppliers, or players whose removal would collapse your market. Reduce dependence on any single one. If you are the foundational species, recognise the leverage and responsibility that comes with it. If you depend on one, diversify before the reef dies.

His competitors didn't just compete with him — they depended on him. Founders can apply this by asking which layer of their market's value chain is truly foundational and positioning there. Being the foundational species means others build on top of you. That creates lock-in, pricing power, and systemic importance that's nearly impossible to displace.

Ecosystems describe the web of interdependent players. Foundational species identifies the single player whose removal would collapse the web. Understanding ecosystems without identifying the foundational species is like mapping a forest without noticing the trees.
