Critical Assumptions

Critical assumptions are the beliefs that must hold for your strategy or bet to work — "customers will pay for X," "we can acquire users at cost Y," "this channel will scale." If a critical assumption is wrong, the plan fails. Making them explicit lets you test and de-risk before going all-in. In building and scaling, listing and stress-testing critical assumptions reduces the chance of building on a broken base. Most failed bets fail because an assumption was wrong and wasn't tested early; the discipline is to name assumptions, rank them by impact and uncertainty, and design the smallest test that could falsify the shakiest one. Once validated, you can scale with confidence; until then, treat scale as conditional.

For every material bet, write down the 3–5 assumptions that have to hold. Rank them by impact and uncertainty. Design the cheapest test for the most critical, uncertain ones. Update the plan when an assumption is invalidated. Use this in board decks and strategy docs so the table sees what the bet depends on.
