Chimpanzee Test

The Chimpanzee Test is a simplicity heuristic: if you can't explain a concept clearly enough that someone with no domain knowledge could grasp it, you probably don't understand it well enough yourself. Named for the extreme version — could you explain it to a chimpanzee? — the real point is that genuine understanding reveals itself in simple explanation, and jargon-heavy complexity often masks shallow thinking. For founders, this is a diagnostic tool: when a strategy, pitch, or product description requires elaborate explanation, the underlying idea may not be clear. Simplicity of explanation signals depth of understanding.

Apply the Chimpanzee Test to any explanation that feels too complex. Strip out jargon. State the core idea in one sentence. If you can't, the problem is understanding, not communication. Use it for strategy documents, product pitches, investor decks, and internal alignment. The test isn't about dumbing down — it's about proving you've thought deeply enough to reach simplicity.
