Core Idea

Throughput is the rate at which a system produces its desired output — units shipped, deals closed, features deployed, customers onboarded. It measures the flow of value, not the effort expended. High throughput means the system converts inputs to outputs efficiently and quickly. Low throughput means bottlenecks, waste, or misallocation are slowing the flow. The founder's job is to identify and widen the constraint that limits throughput. Everything else — team size, budget, tools — matters only insofar as it increases the rate of value delivered.

How to See It

Operations
You're seeing Throughput when the metric is output per unit time — units per hour, deployments per week, deals closed per quarter. If only inputs (hours worked, money spent) are tracked, throughput is invisible.
Engineering
You're seeing Throughput when the team measures cycle time and deploy frequency. High throughput: many small releases per day. Low throughput: large batches released infrequently with long lead times.

How to Use It

Measure throughput explicitly: output per unit time. Find the bottleneck — the step that limits the system's rate. Focus improvement there; gains elsewhere don't increase total throughput until the bottleneck is widened. Reduce batch size, remove handoffs, and automate the constraint.

As a founder
Define the throughput metric that matters: features shipped, customers onboarded, revenue closed per week. Identify the bottleneck — the one step that limits the rate. Focus all improvement there. Don't add people or tools to non-bottleneck steps; that's waste. Measure weekly and attack the constraint.

Henry FordFounder, Ford Motor Company
Ford's assembly line was a throughput revolution. By breaking production into sequential steps, minimising work-in-progress, and eliminating bottlenecks, he cut Model T production time from 12 hours to 93 minutes. Ford measured output per unit time and relentlessly attacked whatever slowed the line. Founders can apply the same thinking: define the output metric, find the bottleneck, and widen it. Throughput improvement compounds — a 10% gain per quarter is a 46% gain per year.
