Economics & Markets
Section 1
Core Idea
Games — in markets, negotiations, or competition — are either simultaneous (players act without knowing others' choices) or sequential (players move in order, observing earlier moves). The distinction matters because optimal strategy differs sharply. In simultaneous games, you reason about what opponents will do without seeing it; equilibrium concepts like Nash apply. In sequential games, you can observe and respond; backward induction (reasoning from the end) is the key tool. Many real situations blend both: some moves are simultaneous (pricing), others sequential (market entry after a competitor). Founders benefit from classifying the game correctly — the right framework prevents strategic errors that come from applying simultaneous logic to sequential settings, or vice versa.

Section 2
How to See It
Pricing
You're seeing Simultaneous play when you and a competitor set prices without knowing each other's choice. Both commit before seeing the other's move; equilibrium reasoning applies.
Market Entry
You're seeing Sequential play when one player moves first (enters a market, launches a product) and others decide after observing. The first mover shapes the game; followers use backward induction.
Negotiation
You're seeing a blend when some commitments are made simultaneously (initial offers) and others sequentially (counter-offers). Recognise which phase you're in to choose the right strategy.
Section 3
How to Use It
Classify the competitive interaction: are you committing blind (simultaneous) or observing before acting (sequential)? In simultaneous settings, choose robust strategies that perform well across opponent actions. In sequential settings, use backward induction — start from the end and reason backward to the optimal first move. If you can convert a simultaneous game into a sequential one (by moving first and making your commitment visible), you may gain advantage.
Decision filter
"Is this a simultaneous or sequential move? Am I committing blind, or can I observe and respond? The answer determines whether I need robust strategies or backward induction."
As a founder
When pricing, launching, or negotiating, ask whether competitors see your move before they act. If simultaneous, prepare for multiple scenarios. If sequential, either move first to set the terms or wait to respond with better information. Convert to sequential (via public commitment) when first-mover advantage is real.

Founders & Leaders
Reed HastingsCo-founder & Former CEO, Netflix
Hastings repeatedly converted simultaneous games into sequential ones by committing publicly and early — the pivot to streaming, the split from DVD, the global expansion. Each visible commitment forced competitors to react to Netflix's move rather than act independently. Founders can apply the insight: when you have conviction, move first and make the commitment visible. You turn a simultaneous guessing game into a sequential one where you define the playing field and competitors must respond on your terms.

Game Theory
Simultaneous vs sequential is a foundational classification within game theory. The distinction determines which solution concepts (Nash equilibrium vs backward induction) apply.
Reinforces
Nash Equilibrium
Nash equilibrium is the primary solution concept for simultaneous games — each player's strategy is a best response to others. Sequential games use subgame-perfect equilibrium instead.
Leads-to
First-Mover
First-mover advantage is a sequential concept: moving first and committing visibly can shape the game. In simultaneous games, first-mover advantage doesn't exist in the same way.

Summary & Further Reading
Simultaneous vs sequential: the structure of who moves when determines optimal strategy. In simultaneous settings, reason about best responses. In sequential settings, reason backward from the end. Classify the game correctly before choosing your move.
