A selection test is any mechanism that filters inputs into a system based on defined criteria. Hiring processes, market competition, college admissions, and immune responses are all selection tests — they determine what enters the system and what gets rejected. The model teaches that the quality of any system is largely determined by the quality of its selection tests. A weak selection test admits noise alongside signal, degrading everything downstream. A strong one filters precisely for the attributes that matter. The critical insight: most selection tests are poorly calibrated. They filter for what's easy to measure rather than what actually predicts success, producing systems full of things that passed the test but don't serve the goal.
