Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis

The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis proposes that the language you use shapes how you think — not just how you communicate, but what you're capable of perceiving and reasoning about. In its strong form, language determines thought; in its weaker (and more defensible) form, language influences thought by making certain concepts more accessible and others harder to articulate. In business, this principle is everywhere: the vocabulary a company uses shapes what it sees and what it ignores. A team that talks in "users" thinks differently from one that talks in "customers" or "people." A company that frames setbacks as "learnings" processes failure differently from one that calls them "mistakes." The words you choose aren't neutral labels — they're cognitive infrastructure that shapes perception, decision-making, and culture.

When you're stuck on a problem, try renaming its components — the new language often reveals angles the old language concealed.
