Replication is the process of copying a successful pattern with high fidelity. In biology, DNA replicates to build organisms; errors in replication cause mutations. In business, replication is how a single successful unit — a store, a process, a playbook — scales into hundreds. The critical insight: the value of replication depends entirely on the fidelity of the copy. High-fidelity replication produces reliable scale. Low-fidelity replication produces chaos disguised as growth. The mental model forces you to ask: is this thing I'm scaling actually replicable? Have I isolated the variables that make it work, or am I copying the surface while missing the substance?

How to Use It

Before scaling any process, isolate the variables that drive its success. Document them precisely. Then test replication in a new context: does the copy produce the same results? If not, identify what's been lost in translation. Scale only after you've proven the pattern replicates reliably. Premature scaling of a non-replicable process is one of the fastest ways to destroy a company.

As a founder
Build systems that separate the replicable core from context-dependent details. Document the "DNA" of your successful process — the steps, standards, and decision rules that must be copied exactly. Kroc understood that replication fidelity, not innovation, was the scaling bottleneck. Every deviation from the system threatened consistency.
