Core Idea

Sustainability is the capacity of a system to maintain itself over time without depleting the resources it depends on. In ecology, an ecosystem is sustainable when consumption doesn't exceed regeneration. In business, sustainability means building at a pace and in a manner that doesn't exhaust your capital, burn out your team, deplete customer goodwill, or destroy the market conditions that enable your growth. The mental model challenges the assumption that faster is always better. A business growing at 200% that burns through cash, talent, and trust is less durable than one growing at 50% on a foundation that compounds. Sustainability is the filter between growth and lasting growth.

Growth
You're seeing it when a startup's growth rate depends entirely on unsustainable spending — burn rate exceeds revenue trajectory, and removing the subsidy would collapse the business. Growth without sustainability is a mirage.
Teams
You're seeing it when a company's pace requires 70-hour weeks from every employee. The short-term output is high, but attrition, burnout, and declining quality signal that the pace is consuming more capacity than it regenerates.
Markets
You're seeing it when an extractive business model alienates customers or suppliers over time — each transaction depletes goodwill rather than building it. Revenue grows while the foundation erodes.

How to Use It

For every growth initiative, ask: can this pace be maintained indefinitely without depleting a critical resource? If the answer is no, identify the constraint — cash, talent, trust, market patience — and either reduce the pace to a sustainable level or invest in replenishing the resource. Build growth loops that regenerate what they consume.

Audit your growth for hidden resource depletion. Are you burning cash faster than revenue catches up? Burning out your team? Eroding brand trust for short-term metrics? Set a sustainable pace — one that compounds without depleting — and resist the pressure to grow faster than your foundation supports.

He capped growth deliberately, refused to chase quarterly targets, and invested in product durability — even running campaigns asking customers to buy less. It worked: Patagonia became one of the most valuable outdoor brands without venture capital, IPO pressure, or unsustainable growth.
