Reasonable Doubt

Reasonable doubt is the threshold of certainty required before acting on a conclusion — the standard that separates justified conviction from premature judgment. In criminal law, it means the evidence must be so convincing that a reasonable person would have no logical reason to doubt the conclusion. As a mental model, it asks: how certain must I be before committing resources, ending a relationship, or changing strategy? The insight is that the standard of proof should scale with the stakes. Low-stakes decisions need only a preponderance of evidence; high-stakes, irreversible decisions demand something closer to beyond reasonable doubt. Most business errors come from applying a low standard of proof to high-consequence decisions — or demanding an impossibly high standard for decisions that are easily reversed.

Before any significant decision, explicitly name the standard of proof you're applying. For irreversible, high-stakes decisions, require convergent evidence and stress-test your conclusion against the strongest counterarguments. For reversible, low-stakes decisions, lower the bar and move quickly. The discipline is matching the proof threshold to the consequence — and being honest about which category the decision falls into.
