Core Idea

Peer review is the process of subjecting work — research, strategy, product decisions — to scrutiny by qualified, independent evaluators before it is accepted. In science, it is the gate between a manuscript and publication. In business, the same principle applies whenever a decision is exposed to informed criticism before it ships. The model's value is error-catching: a second set of eyes, operating with different priors, will find flaws the author cannot see. Its limits are equally real — reviewers carry biases, consensus can suppress novelty, and the process can become performative gatekeeping rather than genuine quality control. The mental model is not "peer review is perfect" but "unscrubbed decisions carry hidden risk."

Build peer review into your decision pipeline at the points of highest leverage: strategy, product architecture, hiring rubrics, and major capital allocation. Choose reviewers for independence and relevant expertise, not proximity or rank. Set clear criteria for what constitutes a valid objection. Accept that the process slows you down — the cost is speed; the benefit is fewer catastrophic errors.

Curie's work on radioactivity was subjected to the most rigorous peer scrutiny of her era — and survived it, twice earning the Nobel Prize. But the process was not frictionless: her 1903 thesis defence was gruelling, and her second Nobel faced political opposition dressed as scientific objection. For founders, Curie's story illustrates both sides of peer review. When the reviewers are competent and honest, the process strengthens work that deserves to stand. When reviewers carry bias — personal, institutional, political — the process can suppress valid ideas. The builder's job is to design review systems that maximise the error-catching function while minimising the gatekeeping dysfunction. Curie submitted her work to scrutiny and insisted the evidence speak. That combination — openness to review plus confidence in data — is the standard.
