Core Idea

"One variable" thinking is the discipline of changing or analysing one factor at a time while holding others constant — the experimental and mental equivalent of ceteris paribus. In complex systems, outcomes depend on many factors; isolating one lets you infer cause and effect and avoid confounding. Founders use it in experiments (A/B tests), strategy (what if we only changed price?), and diagnosis (why did conversion drop?). The lens: before concluding "X caused Y," ask whether you’ve held other drivers fixed or varied them; if not, your inference is weak.

How to See It

Experimentation
You're seeing it when teams run A/B tests that change a single element (copy, layout, price). Holding everything else constant isolates the effect of that variable.
Strategy
You're seeing it when someone asks "what if we only did X?" — e.g. only changed pricing, or only entered one segment. One-variable analysis clarifies marginal impact.
Diagnosis
You're seeing it when a metric moved and the team debates cause. One-variable thinking asks: what else changed? If multiple things changed, attribute with care or run a controlled check.

How to Use It

Design tests and analyses so that only one (or a small set of) factor(s) vary. When interpreting results, list what was held constant and what wasn’t; if many things changed, treat causation as tentative. In strategy, use one-variable counterfactuals to prioritise: "If we could only fix one thing, which would move the needle most?"

"Did we change (or compare) only one thing? If not, we’re conflating effects — either run a cleaner experiment or be explicit about the limits of our inference."

Push for one-variable experiments in product and growth. In strategy and ops, use one-variable reasoning to isolate levers and avoid false attribution when many factors move at once.
