Normalcy Bias is the tendency to assume that because something has never happened before, it won't happen — or that because things have always been a certain way, they'll continue that way. When confronted with evidence of an impending disruption, the mind defaults to "this is probably normal" rather than "this might be a catastrophe." Studies of disaster response consistently find that people underreact to warnings — not because they don't hear them, but because their brains refuse to update from the baseline assumption that tomorrow will look like today. In business, normalcy bias is why incumbents consistently underreact to disruptive competitors, why risk managers dismiss tail-risk scenarios as "theoretical," and why founders who've only known growth can't conceive of decline.
