The method of loci is a spatial mnemonic strategy — dating to ancient Greece — where information is encoded by associating each item with a specific physical location along a well-known route. The Latin word "loci" means "places," and the technique exploits the brain's disproportionately powerful spatial-navigational memory. When you mentally walk a familiar path and encounter vivid images at each stop, retrieval becomes as natural as remembering the layout of your home. The method works because spatial memory evolved under survival pressure (remembering where food, water, and danger are located), while abstract list memory did not. For founders, this is a leverage tool: encoding critical information spatially makes it instantly retrievable in high-pressure situations.

Select a physical space you can visualize in detail — your home, office, or a frequently walked route. Identify 10-20 distinct stations along a natural path through the space. For each piece of information you want to encode, create an exaggerated, multi-sensory image and place it at the next station. To recall, mentally walk the route. The vividness of the images determines retrieval strength — bizarre and emotionally charged images stick best.
