Section 1
Core Idea
Mimetic theory, originated by Rene Girard, proposes that conflict arises not from scarcity or rational disagreement but from imitative desire — people want the same things because they copy each other’s wants. When two parties desire the same object, they become rivals. The rivalry itself intensifies the desire, creating an escalatory loop that can end only through scapegoating or conscious de-escalation. The business analog: competitive conflict often is not about the market — it is about mimesis. Companies copy each other’s strategies, pursue the same segments, and escalate rivalry beyond rational calculation. Understanding mimetic conflict means recognising when you are fighting because the fight itself has become the driver, not the prize.

Section 2
How to See It
Competitive Strategy
You’re seeing Memetic Conflict when two companies escalate a price war, hiring war, or feature war long past the point of economic rationality. Neither can articulate why winning this particular battle matters — the rivalry has become self-sustaining.
Organisational Politics
You’re seeing Memetic Conflict when two teams compete for the same internal resources not because the resource is scarce but because the other team wants it. The desire is mimetic — copied from the rival, not derived from need.
Section 3
How to Use It
When you find yourself in escalating conflict, ask whether the desire driving it is intrinsic or mimetic. Are you pursuing this because it matters to your strategy, or because a competitor wants it? Recognise mimetic traps early and step sideways — differentiate rather than compete on the same axis. The winning move in mimetic conflict is often to stop playing.
Decision filter
“Is this conflict driven by genuine strategic need, or by mimetic rivalry? Would we still want this if our competitor didn’t?”
As a founder
Monitor yourself for mimetic escalation. When you obsess over a competitor’s moves, ask whether you’re pursuing your own strategy or reacting to theirs. The best founders differentiate — they choose a direction competitors aren’t copying and make mimetic rivalry irrelevant by refusing to play on the same field.

Founders & Leaders
Peter ThielCo-founder, PayPal & Palantir; founding investor, Facebook
Thiel studied under Rene Girard at Stanford and built his business philosophy on mimetic theory. His central thesis — “competition is for losers” — is a direct application: mimetic rivalry destroys value because companies copy each other into commoditisation. Thiel’s approach at PayPal, Palantir, and as an investor was to seek monopoly positions where mimetic conflict couldn’t reach. He avoided crowded markets precisely because he recognised them as mimetic traps where desire escalates and margins collapse. Founders can apply Thiel’s lens by asking whether their competitive instinct is strategic or mimetic — and building where the crowd isn’t looking.

Reinforces
Memetic Theory of Desire
Mimetic desire is the engine; mimetic conflict is the output. When people copy each other’s desires, they inevitably converge on the same objects, creating rivalry. Understanding desire explains why conflicts start; understanding conflict explains why they escalate.

Tribalism
Tribalism amplifies mimetic conflict by grouping individuals into opposing camps. Once identity fuses with rivalry, de-escalation becomes harder — you’re not just competing for an object, you’re defending your tribe’s honour.
Tension
Arms Races
Arms races are sustained competitive escalation. Mimetic conflict explains why they start — imitative desire — but arms races can also be rational responses to genuine threats. The tension: not all escalation is mimetic, and dismissing real competitive threats as mere mimesis is dangerous.

One Key Quote
— Rene Girard“Man is the creature who does not know what to desire, and he turns to others in order to make up his mind.”

Summary & Further Reading
Mimetic conflict arises from imitative desire — people want what others want, creating self-reinforcing rivalries. In business, this drives irrational competition and value destruction. Recognise mimetic traps, differentiate rather than escalate, and ask whether your competitive instinct is strategic or copied.
