Memetic Theory of Conflict

Mimetic theory, originated by Rene Girard, proposes that conflict arises not from scarcity or rational disagreement but from imitative desire — people want the same things because they copy each other’s wants. When two parties desire the same object, they become rivals. The rivalry itself intensifies the desire, creating an escalatory loop that can end only through scapegoating or conscious de-escalation. The business analog: competitive conflict often is not about the market — it is about mimesis. Companies copy each other’s strategies, pursue the same segments, and escalate rivalry beyond rational calculation.
