The Least Effort Principle states that when faced with multiple paths to a goal, humans (and most organisms) will reliably choose the one requiring the least total work — cognitive, physical, or emotional. This isn't laziness; it's an energy-conservation heuristic that evolved when calories were scarce and cognitive resources were needed for survival. In modern business, the principle explains why customers abandon complex checkout flows, why employees default to familiar processes even when better ones exist, and why users prefer products that require less thinking. Every additional step, click, or decision point is friction — and the Least Effort Principle predicts that people will avoid friction even when the effortful path produces meaningfully better outcomes. The principle is amoral: it explains both why great UX works and why people avoid hard but important decisions.

Product
You're seeing it when users consistently use a product's simplest features while ignoring powerful but complex ones. The advanced functionality may be superior, but the effort required to learn it exceeds most users' threshold — so they default to the easy path.
Operations
You're seeing it when teams keep using a legacy tool despite a better alternative being available, because the switching cost — learning a new system, migrating data, changing habits — exceeds the perceived incremental benefit.

How to Use It

Design with the assumption that people will take the easiest available path. If the easiest path in your product, organisation, or strategy leads to the outcome you want, you're aligned with human nature. If the easiest path leads somewhere else, you have a design problem — not a people problem. Reduce friction on desired behaviours and increase friction on undesired ones.

Audit your customer journey for every point where effort increases. Each step that requires thought, action, or decision is a potential drop-off point. The Least Effort Principle predicts that people will leave at any point where the perceived effort exceeds the perceived reward — so either reduce the effort or increase the reward at each stage.

Bezos built Amazon's entire customer experience around the Least Effort Principle. One-click ordering eliminated checkout friction. Prime removed the mental effort of calculating shipping costs. Bezos understood that customers don't reward you for making them work harder — even for their own benefit.
