Hypernovelty

Hypernovelty describes the modern condition of being surrounded by an endless stream of new stimuli — news, notifications, content, products, trends — that hijacks the brain's novelty-seeking circuits. The human brain evolved to pay attention to novel stimuli because, in ancestral environments, novelty often signalled opportunity or threat. In an environment where novelty is unlimited and artificially manufactured, this circuit becomes a liability. Hypernovelty keeps you in a state of perpetual shallow engagement: constantly scanning, clicking, and consuming without ever going deep. For founders, hypernovelty is both a strategic tool (capturing others' attention through novelty) and an existential threat (losing their own focus to the same mechanism). Audit your novelty inputs: how much of your attention goes to genuinely new information versus manufactured urgency? Build structures that protect deep work from novelty interruptions — batched communication, information diets, and scheduled review periods. Externally, understand that your customers are in hypernovelty environments too: compete by being deeply useful, not just briefly novel.
