Core Idea

Heredity is the transmission of traits from one generation to the next. In biology, DNA carries information that determines physical characteristics, predispositions, and potential. The business analog: organisations, families, and institutions transmit their "DNA" — culture, values, operating principles, biases, and blind spots — across generations of leaders, employees, and products. What gets inherited shapes what's possible. Some inherited traits are advantages; others are liabilities carried forward unconsciously. Understanding organisational heredity means recognising which traits you've inherited and deciding which to keep, which to change, and which will require deliberate effort to overcome.

Organisational Culture
You're seeing Heredity when a company's third CEO still operates with the same biases as the founder — risk tolerance, market assumptions, hiring patterns — even though the market has changed. The organisational DNA persists long after the original carrier.
Family Business
You're seeing Heredity when a family business inherits not just assets but decision-making patterns. The second generation replicates the founder's strengths, but also their blind spots. What was adaptive in one era becomes maladaptive in the next.

Audit your organisation's inherited traits. What cultural DNA comes from the founding team? Which traits are still adaptive, and which have outlived their usefulness? Deliberately choose which traits to pass forward and which to mutate. Heredity is not destiny — but ignoring it means repeating patterns without understanding why.

Your early decisions become organisational DNA. Hire patterns, communication norms, risk tolerance — these get inherited by every subsequent generation of employees. Be deliberate about what you encode early, because changing organisational DNA later is exponentially harder than setting it right at the start.

Lauder built a cosmetics empire on personal selling, product quality, and relentless perfectionism — then transmitted that DNA across generations of family leadership. Her children and grandchildren inherited not just the company but her operating philosophy: touch the customer, control the brand, never compromise on quality. This heredity gave the company remarkable consistency across decades. But it also carried forward a bias toward premium retail channels that later required deliberate mutation as digital commerce rose. Founders should recognise that the traits you embed become hereditary. Build the DNA you want inherited, and periodically audit whether inherited traits still fit the environment.
