Group Attribution Error

Group Attribution Error is the tendency to assume that the characteristics or decisions of a group reflect the preferences of every individual within it — or that a single member's behaviour represents the entire group. When a competitor's company makes a strategic move, you assume every employee endorsed it. When one engineer ships buggy code, you conclude the whole team is careless. The error runs in both directions: projecting group outcomes onto individuals and projecting individual behaviour onto groups. In business, this bias distorts competitive analysis, customer understanding, and talent evaluation. It causes founders to treat organisations as monolithic actors with unified intent rather than as coalitions of individuals with competing priorities, information gaps, and political constraints.

When analysing a group's behaviour — whether competitors, customers, or your own teams — resist the impulse to assume unity. Ask: Who actually made this decision? How representative is this individual of the group? What internal disagreements or constraints might explain what you're seeing? Disaggregate groups into their constituent actors before drawing conclusions.
