Core Idea

In perfect-information games, every player knows the full history and current state when they move; in imperfect-information games, some moves or types are hidden. Chess is perfect information; poker and many markets are imperfect. Equilibrium and best-response logic still apply, but strategies become plans over information sets (beliefs about what’s unknown). Founders see this in negotiations (private reservation prices), auctions (hidden bids), and product (who knows what about quality). The lens: identify what’s common knowledge vs private, then reason about beliefs and incentives.

Negotiation
You're seeing it when parties have private information (costs, walk-aways, alternatives). Optimal play depends on beliefs and signalling; revealing or hiding information is strategic.
Markets
You're seeing it when buyers or sellers know more than the other side (lemons, adverse selection). Market design and warranties are responses to imperfect information.
Product
You're seeing it when quality or fit is unknown to one side. Demos, trials, and credentials are ways to reduce asymmetry or signal type.

How to Use It

Map who knows what. In perfect-information settings, solve for backward induction or Nash. In imperfect-information settings, form beliefs, consider signalling (costly or cheap), and design mechanisms that improve outcomes (reputation, guarantees, transparency). As a founder, choose when to reveal information to align incentives or when to keep it private to preserve optionality.

Use the perfect/imperfect split to design processes: where information is symmetric, structure clear rules; where it’s asymmetric, invest in signals (proof, track record) or mechanisms (e.g. escrow, milestones) that make behaviour more predictable.
