Focalism

Focalism — also called the focusing illusion — is the tendency to overweight a single aspect of an event when making predictions or evaluations. When estimating how a new hire, product launch, or market entry will affect your business, you fixate on the most salient variable and neglect the dozens of other factors that remain unchanged. The error isn't that the focal point is irrelevant — it's that attention magnifies its importance relative to everything else. Daniel Kahneman demonstrated that people asked "How happy are you with your life?" gave different answers depending on whether they'd just been asked about their dating life — the priming narrowed their focus. In strategy, focalism causes founders to overweight one competitive advantage, one customer complaint, or one market signal while ignoring the broader context that actually drives outcomes.

Before making a major decision, deliberately list all the variables that will influence the outcome — not just the one commanding your attention. Assign rough weightings. You'll often find that the factor consuming 80% of your mental energy accounts for only 20% of the actual result. Build the discipline of zooming out before committing resources based on a single focal point.
