Don't compete passively on every front. Identify the arena where you have the biggest structural advantage and draw competitor attention there. If they engage, they're spending resources on your turf. If they don't, you win that front by default.

Thiel's competitive philosophy centres on choosing where — and whether — to fight. At PayPal, when faced with intense competition from eBay, Thiel ultimately chose integration over dispersed warfare, recognising that concentrating the competitive engagement in one place (the eBay marketplace) was better than fighting across multiple fronts. His "competition is for losers" framework is an inversion of flypaper theory — avoid the flypaper altogether by finding uncontested space. But when competition is unavoidable, Thiel's principle applies: choose the arena, set the terms, and force opponents to fight where you're strongest. Founders can apply this by deliberately selecting the competitive front and refusing to be drawn into fights on unfavourable terrain.
