Section 1
Core Idea
False memory is the phenomenon where we recall events that didn't happen or recall real events differently from how they occurred. Memory is not a recording — it's a reconstruction, reshaped each time we access it by our current beliefs, emotions, and context. The core idea: your memory of what happened is unreliable. Don't treat recollection as fact; verify with records, data, and other perspectives.

Section 2
How to See It
Post-Mortems & Reviews
You're seeing False Memory when team members recall a failed project differently — each remembering themselves as having raised the warning early, or remembering decisions that were never actually made. The post-mortem reconstructs a narrative, not the truth.
Founder Mythology
You're seeing False Memory when a company's founding story shifts over time — the "aha moment" becomes cleaner, the early struggles become more heroic, and the messy reality gets overwritten by a compelling narrative.
Section 3
How to Use It
Write things down in real time: decisions, rationale, dissenting views. When debriefing, start with contemporaneous records, not recollections. Treat all memory-based evidence — including your own — as approximate, not authoritative. Use documentation as the ground truth, not the story people tell later.
Decision filter
"Are we relying on what we remember or on what was recorded at the time? If there's a gap between the two, trust the record."
As a founder
Document key decisions and the reasoning behind them in real time. When revisiting past choices, start from the record, not from memory. False memory will reshape your history to fit your current narrative — and that revised history will mislead future decisions.

Founders & Leaders
Daniel EkCo-founder and CEO of Spotify; data-driven decision-making
Ek built Spotify's culture around data and documentation rather than storytelling and memory. In a music industry rife with revisionist history — where every executive "always knew" what would be a hit — Ek insisted on tracking decisions, hypotheses, and outcomes systematically. This created an institutional check against false memory: when debating what worked and why, the team could reference what was actually decided, not what people remember deciding. Founders can apply this by making real-time documentation a habit, not a chore. Write down the reasoning behind major decisions the day you make them. Six months later, your memory will have rewritten the story — the document won't.

Hindsight Bias
Hindsight bias makes us believe we "knew it all along." False memory provides the mechanism: our memory actually rewrites itself to include the foreknowledge. Together they create a confident but inaccurate account of the past.

Narrative Fallacy
We impose coherent stories on random events. False memory is how the brain executes this: it reconstructs the past to fit the narrative. Both argue for records over recollections and data over stories.
Tension
Scientific Method
The scientific method demands reproducible evidence, not anecdotal recollection. False memory shows why: human recall is unreliable. The tension is practical: use scientific rigour — documented hypotheses, recorded outcomes — to override the stories memory tells.

One Key Quote
— Elizabeth Loftus"Memory, like liberty, is a fragile thing. It can be distorted, contaminated, and even created wholesale — and we often can't tell the difference."
Section 11
Summary & Further Reading
False memory means our recollections are reconstructions, not recordings — reshaped by current beliefs and narrative needs. Counter it by documenting decisions in real time, anchoring post-mortems to records rather than recall, and treating all memory-based evidence as approximate.
