Self-explanation. After reading a passage or watching a talk, close the source and explain what you just learned out loud, in your own words, to an imagined skeptic. Where you stumble, you didn't have it. Return to the source only for the specific gap.

The Feynman technique. Named after Richard Feynman's own study habit: write the concept on a page as if you were teaching it to a smart twelve-year-old. Any sentence you can't write in plain language is one you don't understand. The exercise forces elaboration in the medium (writing) that most cleanly separates fluency from knowledge.

Interleaved practice with prior material. When you encounter a new idea, deliberately place it next to two or three older ideas it resembles or contradicts. The comparison is the elaboration. Standalone facts drift; networked facts hold.

Spaced retrieval. Elaborative rehearsal pairs with spaced repetition (Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve, formalised in Anki and similar tools) because retrieval at increasing intervals forces re-elaboration each time. The interval is the enemy of shallow memory and the friend of deep memory.

Elaboration without accuracy. Generating rich, personal connections to wrong facts encodes the wrong facts deeply. Elaborative rehearsal is a multiplier on whatever you feed it. Ground the material before you elaborate on it, or you'll spend a decade unlearning creatively-encoded misunderstandings. This is the reason autodidacts sometimes hold confident, wrong beliefs — they elaborated hard on shaky primary sources.

Performative depth. Some learners produce elaborate diagrams, colour-coded notes, and beautifully organised outlines that look like deep processing but are really craft projects. If the artefact does not force retrieval without the source in front of you, it is not elaborative rehearsal. The test is whether the notes could be reconstructed from memory — not whether they look serious.

Confusing elaboration with over-explanation. Some material genuinely rewards short, precise processing rather than long-form connection. Mathematical proofs, code, and legal language sometimes require exact memorisation of the structure before you elaborate on the meaning. The technique is context-sensitive. First-time exposure to a truly precise formalism benefits from careful maintenance work before elaboration begins.
