Psychology & Behavior
Section 1
Core Idea
The Context Effect is the principle that the environment, setting, and surrounding information fundamentally alter how people perceive, evaluate, and decide. The same product feels different in a luxury store versus a discount shelf. The same salary feels generous or insulting depending on what your peers earn. The same strategic decision feels bold or reckless depending on the narrative surrounding it. Context doesn't just influence perception at the margins — it can reverse it entirely. In business, the Context Effect means that what you offer matters less than the conditions under which people encounter it. Pricing, positioning, timing, presentation format, physical environment, and surrounding options all reshape the perceived value of the same underlying offering. Mastering context is often more leverage than improving the product itself.

How to See It
Pricing
You're seeing it when a $50 product feels expensive on a webpage surrounded by $20 alternatives but feels like a bargain on a page surrounded by $200 options. The product hasn't changed — the context has.
Retail
You're seeing it when a product sells poorly online but flies off shelves in a curated physical store where lighting, layout, and adjacent products create a context that elevates perception. The context did the selling.
Negotiation
You're seeing it when the same acquisition offer feels generous when presented after a market downturn but insulting when presented after a competitor sells for a higher multiple. The context — not the number — determines the reaction.
Section 3
How to Use It
Before optimising the product, optimise the context. Examine every touchpoint where customers, investors, or partners encounter your offering and ask: what surrounding information shapes their perception? Control the comparison set — if you can influence what your offering is evaluated against, you can shift perceived value without changing the offering. When evaluating others' proposals, strip the context and assess the substance independently.
Decision filter
"Is my perception of this opportunity, threat, or offer being shaped by the substance — or by the surrounding context in which it was presented?"
As a founder
Design the context as carefully as the product. Where customers first encounter your offering, what they see immediately before and after, what alternatives are visible, what narrative frames the experience — these context decisions often determine success or failure more than feature improvements. Control the stage, not just the performance.

Founders & Leaders
Steve JobsCo-founder and CEO of Apple
Jobs understood the Context Effect more intuitively than perhaps any modern business leader. Apple Stores weren't just retail — they were context machines. The sparse, minimalist design made products feel premium. The Genius Bar created a context of expertise and care. Product keynotes were theatrical experiences designed so that each announcement appeared in a context that maximised its perceived significance. Jobs obsessed over the unboxing experience because he knew the first thirty seconds of product context shaped the entire ownership experience. Even pricing was contextual — positioning Apple products against inferior alternatives rather than equivalent competitors. For founders, Jobs demonstrates that controlling context is often higher-leverage than improving the product — perception is reality, and context shapes perception.

Framing Effect
The Framing Effect is a specific type of Context Effect — how information is presented (the frame) alters evaluation. Context Effect is broader: it includes physical environment, timing, comparison set, and emotional state, not just information framing.
Pairs-with
Anchoring
Anchoring uses an initial reference point to shape subsequent judgments. It's the numerical version of the Context Effect — the anchor is the context that determines how all following numbers are perceived.
Enables
Priming
Priming exposes people to a stimulus that influences their response to a subsequent stimulus. It's the temporal version of the Context Effect — what comes before shapes how what comes after is perceived.
