The Context Effect is the principle that the environment, setting, and surrounding information fundamentally alter how people perceive, evaluate, and decide. The same product feels different in a luxury store versus a discount shelf. The same salary feels generous or insulting depending on what your peers earn. The same strategic decision feels bold or reckless depending on the narrative surrounding it. Context doesn't just influence perception at the margins — it can reverse it entirely. In business, the Context Effect means that what you offer matters less than the conditions under which people encounter it. Pricing, positioning, timing, presentation format, physical environment, and surrounding options all reshape the perceived value of the same underlying offering. Mastering context is often more leverage than improving the product itself.

Before optimising the product, optimise the context. Examine every touchpoint where customers, investors, or partners encounter your offering and ask: what surrounding information shapes their perception? Control the comparison set — if you can influence what your offering is evaluated against, you can shift perceived value without changing the offering. When evaluating others' proposals, strip the context and assess the substance independently.
