Conservatism Bias

Conservatism Bias is the tendency to insufficiently update beliefs when presented with new evidence. Even when confronted with data that should significantly change your view, you adjust too slowly and too little — anchoring to your prior assessment rather than moving to where the evidence points. The bias is rooted in the cognitive cost of revising mental models: it's easier to slightly modify an existing view than to rebuild it from scratch. In business, Conservatism Bias is why companies see disruption coming and still don't react fast enough. The evidence for streaming was visible years before Blockbuster acknowledged it. The evidence for mobile-first was obvious before most enterprises adapted. Conservatism Bias doesn't prevent you from seeing the new data — it prevents you from giving it the weight it deserves.

When new evidence arrives, ask: if I were seeing this situation for the first time — with no prior beliefs — what would I conclude? Compare that fresh-eyes assessment to your current view. The gap between them is your conservatism bias. Use Bayesian updating deliberately: write down your prior belief, assign it a weight, then honestly assess how much the new evidence should shift that weight. Pre-commit to specific evidence thresholds that would trigger major belief revisions.
