Core Idea

Cherry-picking is the practice of selecting only the evidence that supports your pre-existing conclusion while ignoring evidence that contradicts it. Unlike confirmation bias — which operates unconsciously — cherry-picking often involves a deliberate or semi-conscious choice to present a misleading subset of the data. A startup reports only its best cohort metrics. A manager highlights the quarters where their strategy worked and omits the ones where it didn't. An investor cites their winning bets and forgets the losers. Cherry-picking is dangerous precisely because the selected evidence is real — it's not fabricated, just incomplete. The cure is disciplined base-rate thinking and the habit of always asking: what am I not seeing? What data was available that didn't make it into this presentation?

Fundraising
You're seeing it when a pitch deck shows revenue growth from only the best three months, customer testimonials from only the happiest users, or market size from only the most generous estimate. Every data point is real — the selection is what's misleading.
Strategy
You're seeing it when a leadership team justifies a strategic decision by citing three successful case studies of companies that made the same choice — while ignoring the dozens that tried and failed. The evidence is valid; the sample is not.
Culture
You're seeing it when performance reviews emphasise a team member's best work and ignore consistent patterns of underperformance. The manager cherry-picks the highlight reel to avoid the difficult conversation.

How to Use It

Build a discipline of asking for the full dataset, not just the highlights. When someone presents supporting evidence, ask: what's the base rate? How many examples did you look at? What did the failures look like? When building your own arguments, force yourself to include the strongest counter-evidence. If your case can't survive the best opposing data point, it's not a strong case — it's a cherry-picked one.

As a founder
Institutionalise the anti-cherry-picking habit. In board meetings, present the worst metrics alongside the best. In strategic reviews, include the failures alongside the successes. When evaluating opportunities, actively seek the disconfirming evidence. The founders who build enduring companies are the ones who can hold the full dataset and still make a decision — not the ones who need a curated subset to feel confident.
